After Rodney King and the LAPD incident, police will forever be under severe scrutiny and they still make the hugest mistakes,,, i feel better when i remember she wounded three of them in the fight.... policemen making drugbusts and totally messing it up.... this will do horrible damage to credibility for the department... another something to upset the community,,,, a tragedy and an act that will not be forgotten soon...

We have discussed the media attention to conflict, and I think there are no clearer examples of conflict than when they examine interactions between the police and citizenry. What is the moral of these types of stories? Stuart Hall's critical theory proclaims that the media encodes the dominant ideology of society and is geared to serve the interests of the powerful elite. The hegemony of the media is not total. These stories of the abuse of power and the condemnation of the individuals who committed the acts seem to come and go with relatively little change to the perceived need for a powerful police force.

Consider also George Gerbner’s assertion that a society who has become fearful, insecure, and dependent on authority (through repeated exposure to violence in the media), may demand protection from these perceived threats and welcome with open arms repression in the name of security.
